DALE GOING is a poet, book artist and founder of Em Press in Mill Valley. Her books include As/Of the Whole (SFSU), The View They Arrange (Kelsey St. Press), Leaves from a Gradual (Potes & Poets) and three Em Press chapbooks. Em Press letterpress editions of poetry by women are in the special collections of university and public libraries and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Dale has received a California Arts Council Grant, the San Francisco State University Chapbook Award, fellowships from the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, and the NY State Latin Teacher’s Award at age 16 for her first publication, a translation from Virgil’s Aeneid. She has written & performed for poets’ theater, taught book arts, curated an exhibit of artists’ books by poets, co-founded the literary zine Rooms and recreated it as a blog, written reviews and interviews, hosted a poetry radio show, and contributed text to the work of visual artists. She has had an ongoing collaboration with Marie Carbone since 1971. Projections of Marie’s collages and photographs and of paintings by James Turner McElheron will accompany her reading.

PHILIP GOING is the author of Pillow Talk: A Year in Haiku.  He wooed Dale with haiku 35 years ago and took it up again seriously playfully 30 years later. Philip is currently writing an adventure book in tanka: Upstream the Voyage/To the Source the Tao Ur Text/ With Commentary /The Inner Landscape Revealed/On the Slopes of Mountain Home. He is a designer-builder and General Contractor by trade, and by avocation a life-long dilettante. His art endeavors have included oil painting, drawing, stone and neon sculpture, flamenco dance, Sufi dance, yoga, fencing, archery, body building, gardens, tree pruning, champagne, tea, and performing the lead in Dale’s poets’ theater play, Out of the Q, as a mute muse in a tutu. He is the Emily Dickenson of Haiku, with over 2,000 poems in a five year span. He writes while trail running on Mt. Tam or in bed. This poetry reading is past his bed time.

MARIE CARBONE is a musician and visual artist. Her collages have appeared on the covers of numerous literary magazines and the poetry book Lovers in the Used World by Gillian Conoley. Artworks from Aerial Perception, a letterpress collaboration of Marie’s collages and Dale’s poems, were exhibited at Berkeley Arts Center. Projections of her collages were featured in Out of the Q, which she also directed. She teaches, composes, performs, and directs musical productions. She makes short films with filmmaker Steve Bage, their most recent being a documentary on plein air painters of the California north coast. Marie and Dale are currently collaborating on a series of photographs and poems.

JAMES TURNER MCELHERON graduated from Vancouver School of Art in 1956 and exhibited as one of “Canada’s promising young artists,” representing Canada at the Deuxième Biennale de Paris. During a 30 year career in the design world, he turned to works on paper in graphite and gouache. Since the mid-1990’s he has painted daily, making acrylics on canvas and mixed-media/collage works on paper at his Santa Cruz studio. “The process of painting for me has been unlearning what I’ve been taught. I don’t think about technique anymore. What matters now is the expression and emotion. As life becomes more complex, I find my painting becomes more simple and direct.”
